Scarification Calculator — Lawn Thatch Removal
Plan your lawn scarification schedule and calculate waste volume.
How We Calculate This
Waste volume is a rough estimate of collected debris: light thatch 0.5 L/m², moderate 1.5 L/m², heavy 3 L/m². These are conservative typical figures — in extreme cases of very heavy, matted thatch and moss a powered scarifier can pull out close to a full garden-waste bag per square metre, so order spare bags if your lawn is badly neglected.
Number of scarifier passes increases with thatch severity: 1 for light, 2 for moderate (the second pass at right angles to the first), 3 for heavy. Heavily neglected lawns may need several more passes spread over the autumn.
Recovery time: 2 weeks for light, 4 for moderate, 6 for heavy scarification. Overseed and feed straight after to speed recovery — early autumn (September) suits this best while the soil is still warm.
Frequently Asked Questions
September is the ideal time. The lawn recovers before winter with autumn warmth and rain. Spring (April) is a second option for light scarification.
Once a year for most lawns. Heavily thatched lawns may benefit from light scarification twice a year (spring and autumn).
Your lawn will look worse before it looks better. Recovery takes 2-6 weeks. Overseed and feed after scarification for best results.
Thatch builds up from dead grass, roots, and runners. Poor drainage, over-feeding, and infrequent mowing contribute. Light scarification prevents buildup.
Yes, scarification can thin the lawn. Overseed immediately after scarifying, then top dress lightly. Water well and avoid heavy use for 4-6 weeks.
