Turf Roll Calculator — How Many Rolls of Turf Do I Need
Work out how many turf rolls you need to lay a new lawn.
Adds the waste factor below so you order enough turf to trim at edges and around obstacles
How We Calculate This
Each standard UK turf roll covers approximately 1 m² (610 mm × 1640 mm).
Formula: Rolls = Area ÷ 1.0 m² (rounded up)
A wastage allowance (5% for a simple rectangle, 10% for curves, 15% for highly irregular lawns) covers trimming at edges and around obstacles. Set it under Advanced options.
Frequently Asked Questions
In the UK, a standard turf roll is typically 610 mm × 1640 mm, covering approximately 1 m². Some suppliers sell larger rolls.
Allow 5% extra for cuts and joins. For irregular shapes or lots of curves, allow up to 10%.
Turf can be laid year-round except during frost or drought. Autumn and spring are ideal. Lay turf within 24 hours of delivery.
Remove old turf/weeds, rotavate the soil, level it, and firm with a roller. Add topsoil if needed to a minimum depth of 10 cm. Rake to a fine tilth.
Avoid walking on newly laid turf for at least 2-3 weeks. After 4-6 weeks the roots should be established. You can check by gently pulling a corner.
