Edging Calculator — Lawn & Border Edging
Calculate lawn or border edging quantities for straight and curved runs.
How We Calculate This
Pieces = (Total Length ÷ effective piece length) × waste factor, rounded up. Metal and plastic strips are 1m, a brick laid end-on is 0.215m and log roll is 1.8m. The effective length subtracts any overlap you set. Metal and plastic edging are anchored with ground pegs (default 3 per 1m strip, roughly one every 30cm), so ground pegs = pieces × pegs per piece. Brick and log roll need no pegs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Metal strip, plastic roll, brick, stone, log roll, and timber. Metal gives the cleanest line.
Push into soil along the border and secure with ground pegs every 30-50cm.
At least 10cm in the ground to stay stable and prevent grass creeping under.
Metal strip edging, plastic roll edging, stone/brick edging, and timber edging are the main options. Metal gives the cleanest, most durable line.
Most edging should be buried 10-15cm deep to anchor it securely. The top should be flush with or slightly above the lawn surface to create a clean mowing edge.
