Wildlife Pond Calculator — Volume, Liner & Pump Size

Calculate the volume, liner size, underlay, and pump requirements for a wildlife pond.

How We Calculate This

How The Calculations Work

  • Volume: Length x Width x Depth x shape factor (0.75 rectangular, 0.667 kidney/circular)
  • Liner: (Length + 2 x depth + 2 x overlap) x (Width + 2 x depth + 2 x overlap)
  • Pump size: Half the pond volume per hour (litres/hour) — enough to turn over a wildlife/plant pond every 2 hours
  • Planting shelf: Perimeter x shelf width (an upper-bound estimate — the waterline shelf sits inside the rim and corners overlap, so usable area is a little less)
  • Shelf depth: Maximum depth x shelf-depth fraction — marginal plants suit 15-25cm of water over the shelf
  • Circular ponds: The diameter (entered as length) drives volume and a square liner; the width box is ignored
