This calculator determines the number of edging pieces, fixings, and concrete needed for your path.
Total length
Total edging = Path length × sides. For both sides, double the path length. Wastage factor adds extra for cuts and joins.

Edging run = path length × number of edged sides (double it for both sides), plus your wastage factor. Pieces = run ÷ unit length, rounded up: 910mm (0.91m) concrete kerbs, 215mm bricks, or 2.4m metal/timber strips. For concrete-bedded types it also allows ~0.01m³ of haunch concrete per metre, converted to 20kg bags at a real bag yield of ~0.009m³ (≈111 bags per m³). Metal and timber strips are pegged instead, at ~3 pegs per 2.4m strip plus 2 extra pegs per corner.
Yes — 10% is the standard allowance for path edging to cover saw cuts, the offcut at the end of each run, and the angled cuts at corners. Bump it to 15% if your path has lots of curves or bends where short kerb sections are cut to follow the radius.
A garden-path haunch runs roughly 0.01m³ of C10/C20 concrete per metre of edging — a small triangular run of concrete brought up to about two-thirds the height of the kerb (Pavingexpert). At ~0.009m³ of mixed concrete from a 20kg bag, that is about 1 bag for every metre or so of bedded edging. Driveways with deeper, wider kerbs need more; check the haunch profile on the supplier datasheet.
Concrete kerb stones (910mm/3ft units, most durable for driveways), brick edging (standard 215mm bricks laid on edge or as a soldier course), galvanised or Corten steel pin edging (2.4m strips), and treated timber boards (2.4m lengths). Concrete and brick are bedded and haunched in concrete; steel and timber are driven in and fixed with ground pegs.
For permanent paths and especially driveways, yes — bed kerbs or bricks on a concrete bed and haunch them (C10–C20 mix) so they resist the sideways thrust from the paving. The haunch should reach about two-thirds of the unit height on each side. Steel and timber edging is not haunched; it is pegged into firm ground, so a sand or soil bed is fine for those.
