17g/m² (ultra-light) for insect protection. 30g/m² for general frost protection (down to -2°C). 50g/m² for heavy frost (down to -5°C). Double layers add extra protection.

How much extra fleece do I need for overlap?

Allow 30cm overlap on each side to weigh down with stones, bricks, or pegs. This calculator includes this overlap automatically.

What is a standard fleece roll size?

Common UK sizes are 1.5m wide x 10m long or 2m x 10m. This calculator uses 1.5m wide rolls as the standard.

Can fleece be reused?

Yes, good quality fleece can be reused for 2-3 seasons. Fold and store dry when not in use. Replace when it becomes torn or thinned.

When should I use garden fleece?

Cover tender plants when frost is forecast, typically October-April in the UK. Also use in spring to protect blossom on fruit trees and to warm soil before sowing.

How We Calculate This

The calculator works out how many strips of 1.5m-wide fleece are needed to cover the bed length, then adds 30cm overlap on each side of the width for anchoring.

Formula: Strips = Bed length / Fleece width (1.5m), rounded up. Length per strip = Bed width + 0.6m overlap. Total length = Strips x Length per strip x Number of layers.

Rolls are calculated at 10m per roll.
