What is the offset method?

Lay a straight tape measure along the longest edge. At regular intervals, measure the perpendicular width to the opposite edge. These width measurements are the offsets.

How many measurements do I need?

A minimum of 3 offsets is recommended. More offsets (5+) give a more accurate result for very irregular shapes.

Is this method accurate?

The trapezoidal method is very accurate for most garden shapes. For highly irregular areas with sharp angles, consider splitting the space into separate sections.

What is the simplest way to estimate an irregular area?

Divide the space into rough rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add them together. This gives a good estimate for ordering materials.

Can I use my phone to measure garden areas?

Perpendicular width at the start of the baseline (offset 0). Measure square to the tape.

Perpendicular width at the next equally-spaced point along the baseline.

Perpendicular width at the midpoint offset along the baseline.

Perpendicular width at the next equally-spaced offset.

Width 5 (end)

Perpendicular width at the end of the baseline (final offset).

How We Calculate This

The offset (trapezoidal) method divides the area into strips. Each strip area = average of two widths x strip length.

The total area is the sum of all strip areas. This method works well for most curved or irregular shapes.

The average width method simply multiplies the mean of all width measurements by the total length.
